AIMS & OBJECTIVES - FROM AN EMPLOYERS PERSPECTIVE

The creative industries need multiskilled, inventive and flexible people but above all we need people with unfettered imagination - the ability to think divergently and look beyond convention and tradition. We also desperately need pragmatic risk-takers - people with a daring-do spirit who will take on a challenge while having the skills and determination to deliver the product.

The Mediaonics Fantasia events aim to highlight these talents and characteristics in order to inform teaching and learning institutions in the design and development of the creative arts curriculum.

Creative production is about creating experiences for others and the
Mediaonics Fantasia events also aim to be exciting and stimulating showcases of some of the forms and techniques that are available to the 21st century Experience Designer.

The Mediaonics Fantasia events are designed to achieve three primary objectives.

1. To provide an example, a model, of how the Mediaonics subject can have a direct role in everyday life - in this case an educational experience or ‘learning theme park’. This is to help students put the elements of the Mediaonics course into a practical context.

2. To provide opportunities for teachers, tutors, artists and media workers to collaborate on a production sufficient for them to learn and share each others practices and to expand their skills and understanding.

3. To provide real life opportunities for students who are preparing for work in the creative industries and to do this by offering intensive production periods working alongside professionals.

With this current production we believe we have provided the environment to deliver these objectives. The commitment by the participants has and needs to be absolute and all who have taken part have welcomed the opportunity to deepen their own knowledge and skills base.

It doesn’t all end here of course. The artwork will be found suitable homes and the production continues as a video shooting and CD-ROM production to showcase the Mediaonics developments. That product is due to be completed around late December.

I hope that you find the outcomes from our action research useful in your deliberations about the future of learning especially in the week of the Tomlinson Report.
